Pay Grade: Starting at Grade 8, $18.49 to $24.96

Reports To: Lead Grounds / Director of Operations    

Schedule: 8 hours per day / 5 days per week / 40 hours per week / 52 weeks


Job Summary: 
The Grounds person is responsible for maintaining the assigned district’s property in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Other essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Make routine repairs and/or reports need for repairs to Lead Grounds person
  • Work closely with crew to maintain high standards of turf management
  • Perform grounds chores including snow shoveling and sidewalk salting as needed, as well as grass and weed removal from walk edges to maintain the school grounds in a safe, clean, and attractive condition
  • Report hazardous conditions immediately to Lead Grounds or Director of Operations.
  • Report damage to buildings or grounds to the Head Custodian or Lead Maintenance.
  • Assist with off-hour emergency calls as needed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
  • Complete daily work while accommodating the students, administrators, and staff.
  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment (i.e., repairs or installation)
  • Perform all duties and procedures within health safety standards as per OSHA and/or MIOSHA.
  • Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment
  • Assist by filling in for custodial, courier, or head custodian position, as needed or directed by Director of Operations
  • Pickup supplies, parts or equipment from vendors as directed
  • Notify Lead Grounds person if supplies or material are of inferior grade
  • Work closely with Lead Grounds person/Supervisor of Building and Grounds to be prepared for scheduled and unscheduled activities
  • Interact with co-workers, other departments, administration, staff, students, parents, and the community in a positive, supportive, and cooperative way.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Lead Grounds and/or Director of Operations.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Possess a CDL License preferred, or willingness to obtain a CDL License.
  • Possess one or more licenses in building trades.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and spoken English language.
  • Ability to accept and learn new processes or techniques.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and make adjustment to various types of equipment, as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Frequently drive vehicles for long periods.
  • Frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.
  • Continuously use hand strength to grasp tools and climb onto ladders.
  • Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds for items such as salt, furniture, and supplies.
  • Occasionally push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work will be performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities as well.

 

Mental Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.

 

Benefits & Evaluation:
In accordance with the Custodial and Food Service Agreement. 

 

Terms of Employment:

The employee will remain free of any alcohol or drugs throughout his/her employment with the district as outlined in Board Policy #4210.     Salary per the Master Agreement between Forest Hills Board of Education and Forest Hills Custodial and Food Service Association.
